Good planning makes the difference between successful entrepreneurs and those who fail within the first years. It doesn’t matter if you have the best idea in the world, if you fail to complete the other steps needed to run a home business. On the other hand, if you’ve just been toying with the possibility, but never actually thought it would be possible to become a business owner any time soon, putting the plan on paper may give you the confidence you need to get things moving today.

To begin with, working from home means you’ll have to work – a lot, probably more than in an office. You can’t stay at home, do your regular chores, and check your e-mail every now and then, hoping that a client will somehow hear about your business, and suddenly give you a very productive order. So, it’s important to establish the right mindset, and to make sure you have the proper discipline to achieve your goals.

You’ll have a lot of tasks that you won’t like – such as establishing a budget, doing your taxes, cleaning up your office space regularly, creating backups for your work, negotiating directly with clients, and so on. Learn the necessary skills when you still have the time to do so at your pace, before things will become urgent. Think whether you want to hire help for such tasks, and whether you can afford to do that.

Draft your business plan, which should include your activity, your sources of financing, the suppliers and potential clients, the competition, the business and advertising strategy, and, of course, the budget. Always write your plan as if you’re preparing it for a bank, to apply for a loan – even if you won’t need financing. This is the first – possibly the most important step – for your future business, so you want to get it right, and to start on the right foot. Take it to a consultant when you’re done, to get an expert, unbiased opinion, and make any changes needed, until you feel it’s perfect.

Registering a home business is pretty straightforward, but make sure you comply with your local zoning regulations. There’s only a certain percentage of your total home that you can dedicate to commercial purposes, and some residential areas also have restrictions regarding the traffic, the level of noise, and so on. It’s a good idea to talk to your neighbors and get a formal approval from them, even if it’s not mandatory – after all, they will be the first to complain, if something goes wrong.

Check whether you can afford to hire an accountant – that’s probably the best way, especially if you have no previous experience, or if you know you’re not the most organized person in the world when it comes to handling your personal finances. Set up a bank account for your business, and start keeping track of all your expenses – you’ll need to be well prepared when it’s time to do your taxes.

Setting up a new business is not the most pleasant task. Of course, you want to get started as soon as possible, and to get to the activities that you love – but don’t skip any of the essential steps mentioned above, and don’t cut any corners – or you’ll end up doing twice the work within a couple of months.

Basically, you’ll have to promote other companies’ products and services, and, hopefully, to drive some sales their way. This sounds simple enough, as you won’t have to manufacture anything or to stock any products – but the rate of success varies considerably, based on the commitment of each individual, and the respective communication and presentation skills.

There are various ways to obtain success with affiliate marketing, and you have to decide what suits you. There’s no point in reinventing the wheel, so find a strategy that you feel comfortable with, among the many that have already been tested. Affiliate marketing is no longer new – there are a lot of websites dedicated to this subject, and many books have been written on this topic. Do you research, make a note of the strategies that you like, or that make sense from your point of view, and decide which path you want to take. There’s no such thing as a perfect strategy, so find one that appeals to you, and it will appeal to your potential clients as well.

Find products that you use and trust. Especially when you’re just starting out, it’s going to be very difficult to find success if you’re not one hundred percent confident about your products. Consider placing your best products where they are easy to notice, but also make sure other products can be found quickly. Integrate your advertising strategies fluently, with banners, text ads, and anything else you plan to use in the future. Keep the design simple, and focus on usability, even if you have a lot of things to say, and a lot of content to add. You can expand as much as you want to in the future, but don’t sacrifice the usability of your website in order to do that.

Remember that it’s worth sacrificing a few quick sales for honesty. Don’t claim your products can do something which they can’t, even if this may attract a few disoriented customers in the beginning. This always backfires, and it’s more important to establish long-term, reliable partnerships, than to make a few bucks in the beginning, and then to lose the confidence of the few customers you had.

The key to becoming a successful affiliate marketer is to have many repeat customers, and a solid and loyal base of clients. It doesn’t matter how much you invest in advertising, the word of mouth is still the most reliable form – and it’s free, too – so learn how to use that to your advantage, and you’ll see your sales increasing constantly.
